Singing the psalms: from the Bible to the protestant Reformation
Psalms are a form of religious poetry, initially written in Hebrew. The name ‘psalm’ derives from the Greek psallō, which means “to sing alongside a lyre (or a harp)”. The Bible contains 150 of them, although othershave been found in the grottoes of Qumrân. Qumranian tradition holds king David as the composer of over 4000 psalms, which would have been sung in the temple of Jerusalem. However, the Biblical king has never been revealed as the true creator of this repertoire, originating between the 10th and 1st centuries B.C.
Psalms, as individual and communal prayers, express joy, distress, trust, and hope. In the words of Reformer John Calvin, they are “an anatomy of all parts of the soul”. The evocative power, poetic beauty and depth of the religious sentiment hold them as the quintessential prayer. Christians have retrieved the psalms intranslation (greek, syriac, latin,...) and have integrated them into the Divine Office (in monasteries), as well asinto mass. Psalms were also part of individual piety: the Penitential Psalms were prayed during Lent, andreciting Psalm 6 was a means of preparing for death.
Explanations:
- Qumrân: Archeological site in Cisjordania, where over 900 manuscripts have been
- Divine Office: Also called ‘canonical hours’ or ‘Liturgy of the Hours’, they are daily prayers made throughout the day and during a part of the night, as practiced, for instance, in monasteries.
