Singing psalms in times of turmoil

The persecution of Protestants begins early. The first pyres were lit starting in 1523, first on the Flanders, then also in the Kingdom of France. In 1554, the printer Jean Crespin published his monumental Book of Martyrs in Geneva, a workreprinted numerous times.

This martyrologist attests of the importance of psalm singing for persecuted Protestants: prisoners sang in their cells, the condemned sang as they walked to the place of execution, and on the gallows orat the stake during their terrible martyrdom. Many were the testimonies of Protestants who sang the Genevan psalms while under torture: to testifyfor the veracity of their cause and to retake their human dignity in the face of humiliation and dehumanisation.

Often the chant of Psalms becomes revolt, as was the case on April 1562 in Valenciennes, where one of the condemned Protestants began singing Psalm 94 by Theodore Beza as he got up the gallows. The crowd, immediately joining in the singing of the psalm, pushed back the soldiers and freed theprisoners.

In the following century, when the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685, the persecutions resumed, and French Protestants sang psalms as the king’s soldiers approached during the dreaded “dragonnades.”

Dragonnade: Originally the obligation to provide lodging for “dragoons” (mounted soldiers), dragonnades were persecutions used by the King of France to force Protestants to convert to Catholicism.
