The harmonization of the psalms: from monodic chant to polyphony

In the Reformed temples of the 16th century, the faithful sang the psalms in unison, without anyinstrumental accompaniment, as the organs were then disassembled.

This type of chant is still practiced in our days in some assemblies in the Netherlands.

However, practices changed rapidly. Since Calvin himself wished for the psalms to be sung ès maisons (“inside the houses”), several musicians of the Renaissance created polyphonic compositions.

The four-voice homorhythmic version by Claude Goudimel is the most important. A Besançon native, this musician was drawn early into Protestantism and became one of the victims of the SaintBartholomew's Day massacre in 1572.

When the four-voice was finally admitted in the temples, these were the arrangements that were kept.

The names of the composers in the 16th century that created the polyphonic arrangements from the Genevan Psalms read as a roster of the great masters of the Renaissance: Orlando di Lasso, Claude Le Jeune, Paschal de l’Estocart, Clément Janequin… and, at the beginning of the 17th century, the great Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck from Amsterdam.

These magnificent motets for three, four, five, or even more voices were never performed duringReformed worship services but were a part of the private worship of Huguenot elites.
